Compassion

Jack H. Bender

Compassion: a sympathetic concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others.

I’m visiting family. We’re up at 5:00am and head to the men’s shelter to cook breakfast. This has become a monthly tradition for my family in Wisconsin. Mary cuts the English muffins and toasts them. Steve fries the ham. Michael fries the eggs. Silvia holds trays of toasted muffins so the cheese, eggs and ham can be placed on them. The sandwiches go in the proofing oven to stay warm. We make four-dozen sandwiches and are finished by 7:30.

Steve remarks that, “We love to do this. Michael often says that cooking breakfast is his favorite day.” The motivation comes from having financial security and wanting the same for everyone else. It’s one way to live one’s faith. We don’t have to create compassion; it’s built in.
